    Gold futures down 1.8%

The dollar fell to a one-week low against a basket of major currencies as oil prices declined and demand for safe havens waned. Investors can “breathe a sigh of relief that chances of a major escalation have been reduced,” Jefferies economist Mohit Kumar said. The DXY dollar index fell 0.4% to a low of 97.969.

Gold futures also fell, last down 1.8% at $3,334.50 a troy ounce, close to levels last seen before Israel launched strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities earlier this month.

Silver prices rise, how high will it go?

“Silver is showing signs of relatively higher momentum with the price trying to breach the crucial US$ 33 level,” Emkay said

Given silver’s diverse industrial applications, its price is projected to rise from its current level, reaching $36.60, $38.70, and $39.30 on COMEX, it said.

“Investing in silver funds with a 12 to 18 months’ time horizon is likely to be a worthy proposition.”

The gold-silver ratio is currently around 90, which suggests that silver is currently undervalued.

Weak dollar, gold up nearly 1%

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent offered support for Jerome Powell amid regular attacks from President Donald Trump, saying he sees no reason for the Federal Reserve chair to step down. Trump has maintained his criticism of the Fed chief and stressed his belief that the central bank’s benchmark rate should be 3 percentage points lower.

Political interference and a potential attempt to oust of Powell before his term ends is throwing the Fed’s independence into question. That’s negative for the dollar, and is helping boost haven demand for gold.

“The USD is losing its store of value function” and bullion is exceptionally well-placed to benefit, TD Securities senior commodity strategist Dan Ghali said in a note.

Spot gold was up nearly 1% to $3,430.05 an ounce at 2:16 p.m. in New York. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index fell 0.4%. Silver and palladium advanced while platinum slipped.

    China copper imports fall

China’s unwrought copper imports declined by 7.2% year-on-year to 837,000 metric tons in the first two months of 2025, customs data on Friday showed, due to increased domestic smelting capacity that reduced the need for additional imports.

Deliverable copper stocks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange stood at 268,337 tons on February 28, more than double the 83,174 tons recorded on January 3.

Idaho House Bill 40 to end taxes on gold and silver

Idaho yesterday formally ended state income taxes on gold and silver as part of its largest tax cut in state history.

House Bill 40, sponsored by House Speaker Mike Moyle and begrudgingly signed by the state’s liberal Republican governor Brad Little, provides a sweeping $253 million income tax cut for Idahoan taxpayers by lowering the rate from 5.695% to 5.3% while also adding two specific exemptions.

Moyle said today, “I’m proud to help secure another $253 million in income tax cuts for Idaho families. Meanwhile, it makes no sense for Idaho to tax gold and silver, the only money mentioned in the U.S. Constitution.”
