Copper mine collapse, 1 killed 5 trapped

A collapse at a copper mine in Chile killed one worker and left five trapped underground, authorities said on Friday, forcing Chile’s state mining company to suspend operations in the affected area of the world’s largest underground copper deposit.

Nine other mine workers suffered injuries, said Chile’s National Copper Corporation, known as Codelco, describing the incident as the result of “a seismic event.”

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude 5 earthquake in an area of central Chile where Codelco’s El Teniente mine is located, at 5:34 p.m. local time on Thursday. Authorities said they’re still investigating whether it was a naturally occurring earthquake or whether mining activity at El Teniente caused the quake.

“We are making every effort to try to rescue these five miners,” said Andrés Music, general manager of El Teniente. “The next 48 hours are crucial.”

Gold up 5% this week, Silver gained

Spot gold jumped over 1% to $3,214.92 an ounce, as of 0801 GMT, after hitting a record high of $3,219.84 earlier in the session. Bullion is up over 5% so far this week.

“Recession risks are mounting, bond yields are soaring, and the U.S. dollar continues to weaken – all factors reinforcing gold’s role as a crisis hedge and inflation shield,” said Alexander Zumpfe, a precious metals trader at Heraeus Metals Germany.

“We believe gold has further to run—in the upside case, we target USD 3,400-3,500/oz over the months ahead,” said UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo.

Spot silver gained 0.4% to $31.31 an ounce, while platinum added 0.7% to $944.35. Palladium gained 1.9% to $925.43.

    Pan American Silver’s shares down

Pan American Silver’s shares slumped Monday in the wake of the Canadian miner’s move to buy smaller producer MAG Silver in a cash-and-stock deal valued at about $2.1 billion.

In morning trading, the shares were 14% lower at C$32.61 in Toronto and down 15% at $23.17 on the New York Stock Exchange. MAG Silver in contrast jumped 8.1% to C$25.49, widening its advance so far this year to 30%.

The deal between the Vancouver, British Columbia, companies will bolster Pan American’s position as a silver-and-gold producer in the Americas and add a stake in a big producing silver mine in Mexico. The agreement comes after precious-metals prices have rallied this year, encouraging a number of mergers and acquisitions among mining companies.

    Ghana gold output to increase

Ghana’s gold production could increase by around 6.25% to approximately 5.1 million ounces in 2025, up from last year’s record output of 4.8 million ounces, the Chamber of Mines in Africa’s top gold-producing nation said on Friday.

“We project gold output to range between 4.4 and 5.1 million ounces, buoyed by increased contributions from Newmont’s Ahafo South Mine and Shandong’s Namdini Mine,” Chamber of Mines President Michael Akafia said at an annual gathering in the capital Accra.

“We’re looking at about 30% to 40% more production than the previous year,” the general secretary of the group, Godwin Armah, told Reuters.
