Arizona Sonoran Copper makes big announcement valued at C$19.9m ($13.83m) with Hudbay Minerals

Under this agreement, Hudbay will subscribe for 11,852,064 common shares of Arizona Sonoran at C$1.68 per share.

Arizona Sonoran president and CEO George Ogilvie said: “We are pleased and appreciative to welcome this further endorsement of our project and the go-forward plan by the team at Hudbay. It is the company’s objective to develop Cactus to be a significant producer of copper cathodes for direct use by industry in the state of Arizona and the larger US supply chain.

“We welcome Hudbay, a mid-tier base metal producer with decades of base metal successes in the Americas and a strong existing footprint in Arizona, as a larger and increasingly engaged shareholder, able to lend its experience and expertise as we advance and develop Cactus.”

Copper mine collapse, 1 killed 5 trapped

A collapse at a copper mine in Chile killed one worker and left five trapped underground, authorities said on Friday, forcing Chile’s state mining company to suspend operations in the affected area of the world’s largest underground copper deposit.

Nine other mine workers suffered injuries, said Chile’s National Copper Corporation, known as Codelco, describing the incident as the result of “a seismic event.”

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude 5 earthquake in an area of central Chile where Codelco’s El Teniente mine is located, at 5:34 p.m. local time on Thursday. Authorities said they’re still investigating whether it was a naturally occurring earthquake or whether mining activity at El Teniente caused the quake.

“We are making every effort to try to rescue these five miners,” said Andrés Music, general manager of El Teniente. “The next 48 hours are crucial.”

Goldman Sachs raises gold forecast again

Analysts led by Lina Thomas moved their gold forecast for the end of 2025 to $3,300 an ounce, from $3,100.

Gold futures rose 1.3% to $3,060.70 an ounce, buoyed by uncertainty over new auto tariffs announced by the White House on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Bank of America lifted its gold-price forecast to $3,500 from $3,000. As with Goldman, their analysts cited central bank and ETF demand, but also pointed out that China’s insurance industry is getting a regulatory push to buy more.

    Gold is “uniquely positioned”

Spot prices hit another record high of $3,357.40 per troy ounce on Wednesday before falling back after Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell said President Donald Trump’s tariffs were “significantly larger” than expected.

The Goldman analysts said that stresses in bond markets “increase our conviction that gold is uniquely positioned to hedge recession risk.”

The bank’s economists say there’s a 45% chance of a US recession in the next 12 months. If that happens, the analysts said gold could hit $3,880 by the end of the year — or even as much as $4,500 under certain scenarios.

Freeport-McMoRan hopes copper will be declared “critical mineral”

Freeport-McMoRan (FCX.N), opens new tab hopes U.S. President Donald Trump declares copper a critical mineral, a move that would unlock tax credits needed to boost American production of the red metal and offset global rivals, CEO Kathleen Quirk said on Monday.

“Having the incentives and clarity around those would be a big plus for the domestic copper industry,” said Quirk, who became CEO of Phoenix-based Freeport last year.

“People are understanding more what copper is used for and its importance in our economy. It’s just a matter of time before it’s classified as a critical mineral.”

“We’re not looking for handouts, but if the government is trying to incentivize domestic production, it’s important to recognize that the U.S. doesn’t have the same grades that we have internationally,” said Quirk.

    Gold eases, silver up .4%

Gold eased on Monday as the dollar held firm, while market participants remained cautious, watching for any potential Iranian retaliation to U.S. strikes on its nuclear sites.

Spot gold was down 0.2% at $3,359.99 an ounce, as of 0820 GMT. U.S. gold futures fell 0.3% to $3,375.20.

Higher energy prices could potentially delay a Fed rate cut and strengthen the dollar, said Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy at Saxo Bank.

Spot silver rose 0.4% to $36.12 per ounce, platinum was up 2.3% at $1,293.90, while palladium gained 2.5% to $1,070.33
