Gold and Silver prove high volatility

Gold prices have dropped by Rs 3,800 within two days after the US President Donald Trump said he has no plans to fire the US Fed’s chief Jerome Powell and also signalled progress with China on the tariff front.

The June futures contract for gold closed at Rs 94,722 per 10 grams, down by 2.69 per cent, while the May futures contract for silver closed at Rs 97,799 per kilogram, up by 2 per cent.

“Gold prices slipped below USD 3,300 per troy ounce levels but there is no change in the long-term fundamentals,” said Manoj Kumar Jain of Prithvifinmart Commodity Research.

    Copper futures up 5%

U.S. copper futures rallied nearly 5% on Wednesday, rising more than other global benchmarks, after President Trump said imports of the metal would be subject to a 25% tariff; the front-month May Comex contract (HG1:COM) currently +4.6% at $4.76/lb.

Trump’s comments in last night’s speech to Congress sparked a surge in Comex copper prices in Asian hours, as traders reacted to the possibility that copper tariffs could be larger than expected.

“A 25% tariff was clearly not what the market was expecting before those comments, and now traders are scrambling to price in the correct level, whatever that might end up being,” Saxo Bank’s Ole Hansen said. “Whatever the final tariff is, the disruption to global trade flows is very real.”

Gold prices down after trade truce

Gold prices have fallen almost 10% from a record high just above $3,500 per ounce in April as a de-escalation in U.S.-China trade tensions punctured momentum, but analysts are sticking with a bullish outlook due to strong underlying support for the metal.

Spot gold was trading around $3,180 an ounce on Friday, leaving prices on track for their worst week in six months.

“Gold prices are more likely to rise than to fall from this stage onwards as other factors like central bank demand and very strong investor demand from China are not going away anytime soon,” said Nitesh Shah, commodities strategist at WisdomTree.

‘Bitcoin Fixes This’—Elon Musk Pitched Gold ‘Upgrade’

Now, as Elon Musk brands the U.S. debt clock “terrifying,” bitcoin-backing U.S. senator Cynthia Lummis has pitched Musk a bitcoin “fix” to questions over the U.S. gold reserves.

“Bitcoin fixes this,” Lummis posted to X in response to Musk’s question about how often the U.S. gold in Fort Knox is reviewed. “A bitcoin reserve could be audited any time 24/7 with a basic computer. It’s time to upgrade our reserves.”

“The recent decrease in volatility, coupled with the rising price of gold, should highlight bitcoinʼs growing appeal as an alternative store of value,” analysts with the Bitfinex crypto exchange said in emailed comments. “We believe that while bitcoin may face some short-term pressures due to macroeconomic headwinds in the coming weeks, its long-term value proposition continues to strengthen.”
