Gold to new record high

Gold surged above $3,400 to a record high on Monday, as the dollar weakened and uncertainty over the economic impact of U.S.-China trade tensions spurred demand for safe-haven bullion.

Spot gold rose 2.6% to $3,415.24 an ounce at 10:46 a.m. ET (1446 GMT). Prices hit a record high of $3,424.25 earlier in the session.

U.S. gold futures rose 3% to $3,426.30.

“As tariff tensions continue to move at a fevered pitch, we continue to see gold prices move to the upside as a safe haven response,” said David Meger, director of metals trading at High Ridge Futures.

Trump to make sure Fort Knox gold is there

“We’re going to go into Fort Knox to make sure the gold is there… do you know about that?” Trump said to a reporter aboard Air Force One, according to a video posted to X by Musk.

“We hope everything is fine with Fort Knox, but we’re going to go into Fort Knox, the fabled Fort Knox, to make sure the gold is there.”

“If the gold isn’t there, we’re going to be very upset,” Trump said.

Then-Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., visited the vaults in 2017. They reported that, despite various conspiracy theories, the gold was present.

    Will gold reserves replace dollar?

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is not increasing the reserves of gold to replace any international currency, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday clarified in the Lok Sabha.

“Gold is also kept in the Reserve Bank and gold is also being bought by the Reserve Bank. But beyond that, as regards an international currency or potential currency, there is not much for me to comment at this stage,” FM Nirmala Sitharman said.

“I think it is very typical of India, particularly for households of small businesses and, it is normally said, women, but general households also, and women also, to invest in gold because they think it’s far more secure and far more liquid” FM Nirmala Sitharaman said.

“The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar, while we stand by and watch, is OVER,” Trump posted on Truth Social after assuming power as the President of the US.

    Precious metals fall, Gold eased

Gold prices slipped more than 1% on Tuesday, as optimism over trade deals between U.S. and its trading partners weighed on safe-haven flows, with a firmer U.S. dollar and rising Treasury yields adding further pressure.

Spot gold eased 0.8% to $3,307.16 per ounce, as of 01:49 p.m. EDT (1749 GMT), after hitting its lowest in over one week earlier in the session. U.S. gold futures settled 0.8% lower at $3,316.9.

“Focus is on trade as the July 9 deadline nears, with the Trump administration ramping up pressure. But some optimism related to trade deals is fuelling risk-on sentiment, keeping gold subdued,” said Peter Grant, vice president and senior metals strategist at Zaner Metals.

Spot silver lost 0.3% to $36.64 per ounce, platinum dropped 0.8% to $1,359.90, while palladium was flat at $1,111.36.

Idaho gold mine wins federal approval despite objection

A contested mine in Central Idaho that will produce gold and antimony earned the U.S. Forest Service’s final approval following a lengthy environmental review and objections from the Nez Perce Tribe, which will lose access for decades to federal lands guaranteed by a U.S. treaty.

“This approval elevates the Stibnite Gold Project to an elite class of projects in America that have cleared NEPA,” Jon Cherry, Pepetua’s president and CEO, said in a statement.

“The tribe’s treaties with the United States are the supreme law of the land and remain binding,”
