Mining in Peru suspended

Mining in Peru’s northern district of Pataz will be suspended for 30 days, President Dina Boluarte said on Monday, after 13 gold mine workers in the area were kidnapped and killed by illegal miners.

On Sunday, miner Poderosa said the bodies of 13 workers from a local firm, R&R, which held a mining contract with Poderosa, had been recovered by police after they were kidnapped last month.

“The armed forces will take control of the area where Poderosa operates,” Boluarte said, but did not provide details on how the mining pause would work.

Peru is the world’s third-largest copper producer, but the deposits of the red metal are largely in the south. Gold and silver are mined in the north.

Jorge Montoro, said the 30-day pause could be extended.

    Copper futures fell by 22%

US President Donald Trump went ahead with 50% tariffs on copper imports but exempted refined metals, which are the mainstay of international trading. The move triggered a record plunge for US prices after a period of fat profits for traders who hurried metal to America before the levies kicked in. A large premium for New York futures over London evaporated.

“The blow-out in the CME-LME spread has been touted as one of the most profitable commodity trades in modern history,” Daniel Ghali of TD Securities Inc. wrote in a note. “In a single session, the White House’s proclamation on copper tariffs annihilated the spread and catalyzed CME copper’s largest intraday fall on record.”

Copper futures on Comex in New York fell by 22% as traders recalibrated the value of metal in the US versus the rest of the world.

Copper trade up to $US10,046.50 a ton

Copper traded on the London Metal Exchange has jumped 14 per cent this year and reached $US10,046.50 a tonne on Thursday, the highest since October.

“Traders are redirecting the metal from Asia to take advantage of the price premium and skirt any potential tariffs on the metal,” said ANZ senior commodity strategist Daniel Hynes.

“The US copper rush could leave the rest of the world tight on copper if demand picks up more quickly than expected,” said ING commodity strategist Ewa Manthey.

    Peter Schiff talks Silver

Renowned economist and gold advocate Peter Schiff has issued a bold new call: silver is about to break out – and fast. In a tweet posted earlier today, Schiff highlighted that silver has outperformed gold for two consecutive days, closing at $33.40 and touching an intraday high of $33.50.

“Silver is the most underpriced hard asset on the planet. While gold protects wealth, silver could build it during the next financial reset.”

Antofagasta copper mining CEO expects copper to remain

The trade war stirred by U.S. tariffs raises a risk for metal demand, the head of Chile’s Antofagasta said, although he predicted AI and other technology could offset any loss of traditional consumption caused by economic weakness.

He also said President Donald Trump’s policies could lead to a more favourable environment for investment in mining

Antofagasta CEO Ivan Arriagada said he expected supplies of copper, needed for construction and the transition to a lower carbon economy, would remain in limited supply.

“In the current environment, where there is a lot more support for mining investment, it should be easier and should happen,” Arriagada said

China urges US to stop potential tariffs on copper

China urged the United States on Thursday to halt an investigation into potential new tariffs on copper imports to rebuild U.S. production of the critical metal, vowing to retaliate if Chinese entities got caught up in the levies.

“We urge the U.S. side to withdraw its investigation as soon as possible,” He said.

“If the U.S. insists on imposing tariffs and other restrictive measures, China will resolutely take the required steps to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests,” He said, without giving any further details.
