Gold Hits Record in Volatile Session

“Until we see clarity on the US policies, both trade-related and economic, it will create an environment for increased levels of gold volatility,” said Joseph Cavatoni, senior market strategist for North America at industry lobby the World Gold Council. “So, while we might see a $3,000 gold price, we expect there could be ongoing movements that bring us back below.”

Spot gold was down 0.1% at $2,905.73 an ounce at 10:28 a.m. in London, after rising to as high as $2,942.68. Silver, platinum and palladium were all lower. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index was steady after climbing on Monday.

Trump metals tariffs propel gold, China steel under pressure

China, the biggest steel maker, is not a top direct exporter of steel to the U.S. but Trump said that China’s exports had forced others to ship more to the U.S., while rising imports “support a conclusion” of transshipment or processing of steel products via third party countries into the U.S.

“Today is a great day for the U.S. aluminum industry,” said Mark Duffy, president of the APAA.

“Unfair trade practices have devastated the domestic aluminum industry and President Trump’s actions today will protect thousands of American workers and their families.”

SPDR Gold Shares was rallying a sharp 1.6%

“Gold bars are bought as a hedge” against tariff-related downside risks to stocks as well as U.S. and global economic growth, commodity analysts at Citigroup said in a research note on Friday after the U.S. stock market’s close. “In precious metals, we see gold moving higher very near term” to $3,000 per ounce, they wrote.

“Gold has soared to another record high today amid a further ratcheting up in trade tensions,”  said Joe Maher, assistant economist at Capital Economics, in a note Monday. “Concerns that gold may get caught in the trade-war crossfire may also have led U.S. investors to buy up gold in order to get ahead of any future tariffs that might affect U.S. gold imports.”

$3,000/oz milestone in sight for Gold

U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest tariff threats have ignited another gold rush, propelling the safe-haven metal to new heights and bringing the glittering $3,000 milestone into view.

Spot gold climbed to a record $2,911.30 a troy ounce on Monday – its seventh record peak to date in 2025. Prices are already up nearly 11% so far this year after a staggering 27% gain in 2024.

“Gold is very clearly targeting the $3,000 level and the market is incredibly strong, almost relentless. Now its only a question of when it will scale the level and not if it will,” independent analyst Ross Norman said.

Will gold reserves replace dollar?

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is not increasing the reserves of gold to replace any international currency, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday clarified in the Lok Sabha.

“Gold is also kept in the Reserve Bank and gold is also being bought by the Reserve Bank. But beyond that, as regards an international currency or potential currency, there is not much for me to comment at this stage,” FM Nirmala Sitharman said.

“I think it is very typical of India, particularly for households of small businesses and, it is normally said, women, but general households also, and women also, to invest in gold because they think it’s far more secure and far more liquid” FM Nirmala Sitharaman said.

“The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar, while we stand by and watch, is OVER,” Trump posted on Truth Social after assuming power as the President of the US.
