President Trump will add copper to trade protection

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said nothing would stop President Donald Trump’s expanded 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum until U.S. domestic production is strengthened, and that Trump will add copper to his trade protections.

“We can’t be in a war and rely on steel and aluminum from some other country. I mean, it’s just not reasonable,” Lutnick said. “So the president wants steel and aluminum in America, and let me be clear, nothing is going to stop that until we’ve got a big, strong domestic steel and aluminum capability. And by the way, he’s going to add copper to that mix too.”

Missouri passes bill on gold and silver

The Missouri legislature has passed a bill that would allow the state government to accept gold and silver as payment for taxes and other transactions

The legislation, led by Republicans, would require state government entities to accept electronic versions of gold and silver, called “electronic specie currency,” as payment for taxes and public debts. The bill doesn’t require businesses to accept gold and silver as payment for private uses, but it would allow them to do so.

“The goal is about restoring economic and political freedom back to everyday Missourians,” state Rep. Bill Hardwick (R) said.

    Trump tariffs shake silver market

“People are well advised to know and expect that [silver] is going to be volatile,” Krauth said. “It’s going to be more volatile than gold, and if you talk about silver stocks, that’s another—you know, it’s exponentially more volatile.”

“Maybe it’s not a bad idea to wait a little bit to let things calm down.”

    Copper price up.4%

Benchmark copper on the London Metal Exchange (LME) was up 0.4% at $9,418 a metric ton by 1000 GMT, having hit a peak of $9,481.50 in the previous session for its highest since April 3.

“It’s almost impossible to see what is happening from one day to the next. No doubt the tariff optimism that triggered the risk-on rally early in the week has faded again,” said Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy at Saxo Bank in Copenhagen.

U.S. Comex copper futures gained 0.5% to $4.87 a lb, bringing the premium over LME copper to $1,314 a ton.

Zambia allows geologists to explore copper deposits

India has dispatched a team of geologists to Zambia to explore copper and cobalt deposits, two Indian government sources said, as New Delhi steps up efforts to secure critical mineral supplies essential to its energy transition.

The Zambian government this year agreed to allocate 9,000 square km (3,475 square miles) to India for the exploration of cobalt – a key component in batteries for electric vehicles and mobile phones – as well as for scouting copper, which is widely used in power generation, electronics, and construction.

The exploration project will last for three years and most of the analysis will be done in laboratories in India, one of the sources said.
