South African Rand strong

South Africa’s rand strengthened on Monday, as gold hit a fresh high and optimism grew over the prospect of an agreement between the two biggest government partners on the budget.

At 0728 GMT, the rand traded at 18.2375 against the dollar, about 1.1% stronger than its previous close.

Gold prices touched an all-time high on Monday as investors stressing over a global trade war and economic slowdown from the world’s biggest economy turned towards the safe-haven asset. South Africa is a major producer of the precious metal.

    Gold and Silver fell 1%

Gold fell over 1% on Tuesday after hitting a near four-week high, pressured by a firmer dollar as investors grew cautious ahead of a potential call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Spot gold fell 1.1% to $3,340.79 an ounce as of 10:21 a.m. ET (1421 GMT), after hitting its highest since May 8, earlier in the session.

“We are moving into this period that is well known to be the summer doldrums, so there’s an expectation that the gold market could fall into a bit of a lull or a sideways consolidation,” said David Meger, director of metals trading at High Ridge Futures.

“I believe the Fed is ready to begin to cut rates again, but more than likely not until September…that is another factor likely to weigh on the dollar and support gold,” Meger added.

Spot silver fell 1.2% to $34.37 an ounce

Platinum lost 0.4% to $1,059.32, while palladium was up 1.4% at $1,003.10.

    50% tariff on copper, Brazil

President Donald Trump on Wednesday said the White House was “very busy” crafting its trade policy as the clock ticks down on his self-imposed August 1 deadline. At that point, America could fundamentally reshape the way it does business around the world.

Trump signed executive actions on Wednesday imposing a 50% tariff on Brazil, a 50% tariff on certain copper products and suspending a tax perk for all countries that allowed cheap packages to fly into the US duty-free.

Trump said the agreement, if completed, would include developing Pakistan’s oil reserves with a yet-to-be-named oil company.

    Gold dips, Silver up .1%

Gold prices dipped for a second straight session on Monday as U.S.-China trade tensions eased, and the market awaited data due this week.

Spot gold was down 0.6% at $3,297.10 an ounce as of 09:27 a.m. ET (1327 GMT). U.S. gold futures rose 0.3% to $3,307.80.

“The broader gold forecast and price direction remains constructive, even with some of its haven appeal diminishing,” said Fawad Razaqzada, market analyst at City Index and FOREX.com.

“Until we witness clear patterns of lower highs, lower lows, and firm trade agreements rather than more political bluster from the Trump administration, the prospect of fresh highs for gold cannot be dismissed.”

Spot silver eased 0.1% to $33.04, platinum gained 1.8% to $988.90 and palladium added 0.8% to $956.35.

US Copper’s updated PEA estimates NPV over $1 billion

Moonlight – Superior project in California

The study envisions a mine life of 14 years, producing 903,000 tonnes of copper, plus 12 million oz. of silver and 63,000 oz. of gold. A majority of the production will come from mining the sulfide mineralization at Moonlight-Superior.

US Copper CEO Stephen Dunn said the PEA, which a culmination of several years of planning, drilling, metallurgical testing and engineering studies, confirms “substantial economic opportunity” at current copper prices that can be realized through the development of a series of open pit mines on the property.

Gold prices all – time high, $2,800 mark

Spot gold steadied at $2,795.52 per ounce by 11:18 GMT, after hitting a record peak of $2,800.99 earlier in the session. Prices rose more than 6% for the month and 1% for the week.

“The rally could hold for as long as there is uncertainty in the market. A lot of today’s uncertainty stems from not knowing whether and how tariffs will be applied,” said WisdomTree commodities strategist Nitesh Shah.

“We see central bank buying as the strongest structural force in the gold market, underpinning our long-term constructive view,” said Carsten Menke, analyst at Julius Baer.
