$13 billion in Idaho gold. A mineral critical to U.S. defense.

“We’ve interdeveloped or interwoven cleanup of these legacy impacts with modern, responsible mining activity,” Mckinsey Lyon, spokesperson for Perpetua Resources, told the Idaho Statesman. “And we’ve done that because we’re so serious about our commitment that we can leave this place better.”

“Perpetua has a really glamorous vision for what the site is going to look like afterwards, and I hope that’s successful,” John Robison, public lands and wildlife director with the Idaho Conservation League, told the Statesman. “I don’t see that from the mine plan.”

“This approval elevates the Stibnite Gold Project to an elite class of projects in America that have cleared NEPA,” Jon Cherry, Perpetua’s president and CEO, said in a statement. “The Stibnite Gold Project can deliver decisive wins for our communities, the environment, the economy, and (U.S.) national security.”

    Gold’s price gains jewellery demand

A 12% y/y drop in Q4 gold jewellery consumption to 547t- took the annual total down to 1,877t, down 11%, as unrelenting gold price strength impacted consumers’ ability to buy, the World Gold Council (WGC) said in a report on Wednesday.

For 2025, the WGC said central banks and “ETF investors likely to drive demand with economic uncertainty supporting gold’s role as a risk hedge, but on the flipside, keeping pressure on jewellery.”

Gold adds to record rally amid trade war

Spot gold was up 0.8% at $2,864 per ounce by 09:24 a.m. ET (1424 GMT), after hitting a record high of $2,877 earlier in the session.

“Gold continues to be largely influenced by trade uncertainties… the tariffs with China and the retaliation has the market on edge, so safe-haven flows remain the dominant factor,” said Peter Grant, vice president and senior metals strategist at Zaner Metals.

Spot silver rose 0.4% to $32.23 per ounce, platinum gained 1.6% to $979.40 and palladium added 0.4% to $994.75.

    Gold close to reaching $3000

It appears that the Federal Reserve is on hold when it comes to moving interest rates until midyear, said Peter Grant, vice president and senior metals strategist at Zaner Metals. But “most of the other major central banks remain in easing mode, providing an additional tailwind for gold.” Ongoing trade and geopolitical uncertainty suggest upside potential to the psychologically important $3,000 level, he said.

    Gold rises with new record

“We could envision a situation where inflation migrates higher, while the economy slows down as the auto sector grinds to a sudden halt, for example,” said Bart Melek, global head of commodity strategy at TD Securities.  “Higher inflation and low rates, and the associated angst with the president’s imposition of tariffs, so uncertainty and risk are helping gold.”

“These tariffs create a strong tailwind for gold,” Bank of Montreal analysts wrote in a note. “Not only because of their inherent inflationary effects but also as the USA’s increasingly hawkish foreign policy may accelerate de-dollarisation plans.”
