Zambia says Saudi’s Manara interested in its copper assets

Saudi Arabia’s Manara Minerals is looking for critical minerals projects in Zambia to invest in, the southern African country’s mines minister Paul Kabuswe told Reuters on Thursday.

“They (Manara) are interested, but we do not know which ones yet,” he said on the sidelines of a mining conference in Riyadh, adding that an announcement on a potential mining deal between Zambia and Saudi Arabia is likely this year.

“We no longer want those agreements where we have 10% or 15%,” he said, adding that the government is also holding talks with Barrick Gold, Ivanhoe Mines and Chinese investors on their plans for new projects.

Gold reaching $3,000/oz in near-term, says Citi

“The gold bull market looks set to continue under Trump 2.0 with trade wars and geopolitical tensions reinforcing the reserve diversification/de-dollarization trend and supporting EM official sector gold demand, and with global growth concerns (tariff and cycle related) set to raise ETF and OTC investment demand,” Citi stated in a note.

“We expect gold to continue to rise as a hedge against growth and other risks, including actual and perceived rising growth risks, including trade wars, still-high interest rates weighing on growth, continued deterioration in the U.S. labor market, ex-U.S. currency devaluation risks, and potential U.S. equity drawdown risks,” the bank noted.

Silver up 1.2%, dollar hits lowest in months

Silver gained as much as 1.2%, rising for a third day. A guage of the dollar hit the lowest in about three months, as the euro strengthened amid Germany’s plan to boost spending and loosen borrowing restrictions.

The “tidal wave” of silver risks pushing freely available silver in the London spot market below a critical threshold needed for the market to function, Daniel Ghali, a senior commodity strategist at TD Securities, recently wrote in a note.

Spot silver rose 0.9% to $32.262 an ounce as of 11:41 a.m. in London. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index fell 0.4%. Gold and palladium were little changed, while platinum advanced.

  • Weak dollar and Treasury yields

“U.S. dollar and Treasury yields are lower, which is helping gold catch a bit of support… The overall uptrend remains intact and the path of least resistance favours the upside,” said Ilya Spivak, head of global macro at Tastylive.

“Prices have been stable in a range between about 2,830 and 2,960 for the past four weeks… We would need to see a convincing break above or below these boundaries to conclude that some sort of lasting directional move is resuming.”

Spot silver added 0.3% to $32.19 an ounce, platinum was steady at $957.89 and palladium lost 0.3% to $940.47.
