Chile’s Codelco sending copper to India

Chile’s state-owned Codelco, the world’s largest copper producer, said on Wednesday it would supply copper concentrates to India’s Adani Group’s $1.2 billion smelter, the world’s biggest single-location plant of its type.

The supply will begin this year, said Codelco

Codelco also separately signed a preliminary agreement with Hindustan Copper to cooperate on exploring and processing minerals.

Gold Miners Reaping A Record Cash Harvest

Goldman Sachs is tipping a continued rise in Newmont’s share price with a target for its New York listed shares set at $47.20, up 17% on last sales at $40.23 while the company’s Australian listed shares are forecast to rise from A$64.80 to A$76.20.

Strong central bank demand is expected to continue lifting the gold price towards $3000 an ounce from its current $2670/oz, according to Goldman Sachs

“We expect our Australian gold coverage is set for a growing cash harvest over the next 12-months as price increases outweigh cost escalations, supporting further balance sheet strength, growing capital returns and prospective merger and acquisition activity,” Goldman Sachs said.

Gold Price levels hit record highs

The precious metal remains supported as concerns about an intensifying global trade war continue to place downward pressure on the dollar and Treasurys amid diminishing faith in the U.S. as a reliable trading partner.

Gold’s price, which soared 6% last week and trades 23% higher since the start of the year, seesawed Sunday evening as investors digested news that recently announced U.S. tariff exemptions on smartphones, computers, and semiconductors could be temporary, with the president later pledging a national security trade investigation into the chip sector.

Central banks back at it, jewelry fell

Central banks worldwide are on track to buy 1,000 metric tons of gold in 2025, which would be their fourth year of massive purchases as they diversify reserves from dollar-denominated assets into bullion, consultancy Metals Focus said.

The price rally has so far kept purchases by central banks, a crucial category of demand, unaffected with the first-quarter buying in line with the 2022-24 quarterly average, Metals Focus said in its annual report on Thursday.

Jewelry demand for bullion has been hit hard by the price rally. Gold jewelry fabrication fell 9% to 2,011 tons in 2024 and is expected to deliver a 16% slump this year with India and China accounting for much of this decline.

Gold and Silver to be legal tender in Florida

Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill on Tuesday that would recognize gold and silver as legal tender in the state, paving a path for Floridians to use the commodities in payment transactions.

The bill, HB 999, starts the process of allowing government or private entities, such as businesses, to voluntarily accept gold and silver as a form of debt payment. The bill also outlines sales tax exemptions on the purchase of the precious metals if they meet the purity requirements or if the sale of the gold or silver exceeds $500.

HB 999 is set to go into effect on July 1, 2026, if the Florida Legislature ratifies the rules to implement the bill before then.

“Florida stands firmly for freedom, economic self-determination, and resistance to government overreach,” the governor said. “But for too long, outdated regulations and unnecessary sales taxes have made it impractical for Floridians to enter the gold and silver market.”
