    Gold prices, Silver gained

Gold prices rose to a two-week high on Tuesday, supported by post-holiday buying from China and concerns over potential U.S. tariffs on pharmaceutical imports, while investors await the outcome of the Federal Reserve’s policy meeting.

Spot gold was up 1.9% at $3,395.94 an ounce at 1200 ET (1600 GMT). Earlier in the session, prices rose around 2% to the highest since April 22, when they hit a record high of $3,500.05/oz.

“The bull market is being driven by China’s latest gold investing surge, plus the ongoing bid from central banks wanting to cut their exposure to U.S. assets, most especially the dollar,” said Adrian Ash, BullionVault director of research.

Spot silver gained 1.5% to $33 an ounce, platinum rose about 2.4% to $982.18 and palladium added 3.4% to $972.46.

    What is National Coin Week?

The history of National Coin Week began in 1923, when American Numismatic Association Governor Julius Guttag suggested to the association’s President, Moritz Wormser, that a week-long event should be established “to attract the general public to our hobby and consequently increase our membership, and aid in our science.” That December, the first announcement of a “Coin Week” was made in The Numismatist and scheduled for the week of February 9-16, 1924.

In 2026, America will celebrate 250 years of independence. This milestone invites us to reflect on the many ways money and freedom are connected.

  • Gold-scammer jailed for 6.5 years

A California man was sentenced to 6½ years in prison Tuesday for his role in ongoing “government impostor” gold-bar scams that are costing Americans millions every year.

“This is a national epidemic,” prosecutor Hannah Gleason said in a courtroom in Montgomery County, Maryland, which has been hit hard by the complex frauds. “These are highly organized criminal organizations.”

The case at hand cost a 64-year-old woman, living in Montgomery’s Leisure World community, $789,000. She had counted on the savings to fund the medical needs of herself and other family members and now fears she may lose her home, Gleason said.

“She worries about her financial security and financial health,” Gleason said. “This has caused great emotional distress and impact to her, and has led her to believe she can’t trust people.”
