Florence copper project, Florence Arizona

Construction continues to advance on schedule and first copper production is still targeted before the end of 2025. Overall project completion was at 78% as of March 31, 2025.

“The project is in great shape and Florence Copper will soon become a major new supplier of copper cathode for the US market. The project is uniquely positioned to produce and sell refined copper inside the United States and potentially benefit from premium COMEX copper pricing in the coming years.”

Resolute Mining generating cash despite Mali limbo

The Mali situation will rumble on for some time: the company has already paid the country $160mn, agreed while Holohan was still detained, but will only have its longer-term future confirmed once signed on to the 2023 mining code. Berenberg analysts have slashed their cash profit forecasts for 2025 and 2026 by 34 and 39 per cent, respectively, taking them to $261mn and $219mn.

Silver could still outperform gold in second half of 2025

“The white metal may get squeezed, as recovering Asian demand absorbs recent inventory builds in the aftermath of the Chinese slowdown and the base metal concentrate processing capacity increases,”

“We project the metal to average $36/oz in the final months of next year, making it a commodity outperformer as the XAU/XAG ratio challenges yearly lows.”

“With its low correlation to traditional assets such as equities and bonds, silver offers powerful diversification benefits,” Silver Institute said. “Historically, silver has proven its value during times of economic and geopolitical crises, serving as a reliable hedge against inflation, currency devaluation, and systemic financial instability. In the context of the modern global landscape, this role has become even more pronounced.”

Copper tariff in effect August 1

U.S. President Donald Trump sprang a double surprise on the copper market when he announced import tariffs of 50% effective next month.

The August 1 start date signals the end of the race to ship physical metal to the United States to capture the tariff arbitrage.

A lucky few with cargoes already afloat may yet cross the finishing line in time, but the physical tariff trade is rapidly unwinding.

The LME benchmark spread is now in a comfortable contango of $66 per ton, compared with a backwardation of more than $300 per ton at the end of June.

Gold is struggling maybe not for long

Gold prices struggle to hold onto gains after key U.S. data showed inflation picked up in June as expected, potentially signaling companies are starting to pass on tariff costs to consumers. Futures are down 0.1% at $3,357.50 a troy ounce following a 0.5% rise earlier in the session.
