Gold on 3 month high

Spot gold climbed 1.6% to $4,590.51 per ounce by 10:19 a.m. EDT (1419 GMT), earlier touching $4,604.18 — its highest since May 15. U.S. gold futures rose 1.7% to $4,647.00.

“A big factor, of course, is technical… next step is $4,700 if this momentum continues, but also I think it’s been very much driven by a drop in the U.S. dollar,” said Bart Melek, global head of commodity strategy at TD Securities.

“Gold call option demand has risen sharply amid renewed demand for global macro-policy hedges, creating a mechanical price amplifier to both the upside and downside,” Goldman Sachs said in a note.

Spot silver gained nearly 2% to $69.43 per ounce, platinum climbed 3.8% to $1,897.36, while palladium rose 0.6% to $1,342.30. All metals are set for a weekly gain.

    Mali suspends artisanal gold mining

Mali said on Wednesday it was suspending licenses for foreign artisanal gold mining companies after a series of fatal accidents in the West African country, one of Africa’s top three gold producers.

Gen. Assimi Goita, president of Mali’s transitional government, ordered “the suspension of artisanal mining permits granted to foreigners,” according to a statement issued following a Council of Ministers meeting.

“These measures are designed to further strengthen the state authorities and protect our fellow citizens. These measures give us the power to seize materials (mining equipment), which will be confiscated and placed in the domain of national heritage,” Gen. Daoud Ali Mohammedine, the minister of security and civil protection, said on ORTM.

Gold reaching $3,000/oz in near-term, says Citi

“The gold bull market looks set to continue under Trump 2.0 with trade wars and geopolitical tensions reinforcing the reserve diversification/de-dollarization trend and supporting EM official sector gold demand, and with global growth concerns (tariff and cycle related) set to raise ETF and OTC investment demand,” Citi stated in a note.

“We expect gold to continue to rise as a hedge against growth and other risks, including actual and perceived rising growth risks, including trade wars, still-high interest rates weighing on growth, continued deterioration in the U.S. labor market, ex-U.S. currency devaluation risks, and potential U.S. equity drawdown risks,” the bank noted.

Singapore being used by the “ultra-wealthy”

The ultra-wealthy are increasingly moving their gold offshore as economic and geopolitical uncertainty roils markets — and Singapore is emerging as a favored destination.

Not far from the city-state’s airport sits a six-story facility covered in onyx and fortified by tight security. Tucked behind its steel doors are gold and silver bars amounting to about $1.5 billion.

“A lot of very high net worth clients are looking at tariffs, looking at the world changing, looking at the potential of geopolitical instabilities,” Gregersen told CNBC.

“The idea of putting physical metal in a safe jurisdiction like Singapore with parties they can trust is becoming a big trend nowadays,” he said, adding that 90% of the new orders are coming from outside of Singapore.
