Gold, not Bitcoin, becomes investor safe haven

Gold prices rallied on Tuesday, regaining ground after a slight pullback at the start of March. Spot gold was up 0.4%, reaching $2,900.78 an ounce as of 7:30 AM UTC. The rally was supported by a weakening US dollar spot index that has dropped to 103.5, a 24-hour 0.2% downtick.

Gold’s more “resilient” performance against the dollar is giving investors more incentives to turn against Bitcoin, with its price falling by more than $15,400 over the past month.

“Now that Bitcoin fell below $77K, it’s down 30% from its January record high,” Schiff posted on X. “It’s hard to see the rationale for the U.S. government holding Bitcoin as a reserve asset when it can lose that much market value so quickly. The rationale will be even harder to see when it’s down 50%.”

Gold rises as concerns grow over tariffs

Gold prices climbed on Thursday due to escalating concerns about U.S. President Donald Trump’s impending tariff plans, which could further strain global trade relations.

Spot gold added 0.3% to $2,913.40 per ounce as of 11:58 a.m. ET (1658 GMT), moving back towards its record peak of $2,942.70 hit on Tuesday. U.S. gold futures firmed 0.4% to $2,941.40.

“The major factor is political uncertainty and the economic consequences … the PPI was pretty much neutral and it didn’t really have much of an effect on gold, investors around the world are worried about what the Trump policies will do to the overall economy,” said Jeffrey Christian, managing partner of CPM Group.

Spot silver fell 0.3% to $32.13 per ounce. Platinum was down 0.2% to $990.15 and palladium was up 1.6% to $989.50.

Copper mine collapse, 1 killed 5 trapped

A collapse at a copper mine in Chile killed one worker and left five trapped underground, authorities said on Friday, forcing Chile’s state mining company to suspend operations in the affected area of the world’s largest underground copper deposit.

Nine other mine workers suffered injuries, said Chile’s National Copper Corporation, known as Codelco, describing the incident as the result of “a seismic event.”

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude 5 earthquake in an area of central Chile where Codelco’s El Teniente mine is located, at 5:34 p.m. local time on Thursday. Authorities said they’re still investigating whether it was a naturally occurring earthquake or whether mining activity at El Teniente caused the quake.

“We are making every effort to try to rescue these five miners,” said Andrés Music, general manager of El Teniente. “The next 48 hours are crucial.”

    Silver stays strong

The silver market has seen a lot of noise at the $33 level, as it is a major resistance level from what I can see. At this point, you need to understand that the silver market is not just a precious metal, but an industrial one.
