Freeport-McMoRan hopes copper will be declared “critical mineral”

Freeport-McMoRan (FCX.N), opens new tab hopes U.S. President Donald Trump declares copper a critical mineral, a move that would unlock tax credits needed to boost American production of the red metal and offset global rivals, CEO Kathleen Quirk said on Monday.

“Having the incentives and clarity around those would be a big plus for the domestic copper industry,” said Quirk, who became CEO of Phoenix-based Freeport last year.

“People are understanding more what copper is used for and its importance in our economy. It’s just a matter of time before it’s classified as a critical mineral.”

“We’re not looking for handouts, but if the government is trying to incentivize domestic production, it’s important to recognize that the U.S. doesn’t have the same grades that we have internationally,” said Quirk.

    Gold hits all-time high

Bullion surged as much as 1.4% to $2,798.59 an ounce, surpassing its previous all-time high set in October. A weaker dollar makes bullion more appealing for investors holding other currencies as it’s priced in the US currency.

“When you get rising inflation and you get declining growth, you get stagflation, then gold is one of the best-performing commodities in that environment.”

    Copper price up.4%

Benchmark copper on the London Metal Exchange (LME) was up 0.4% at $9,418 a metric ton by 1000 GMT, having hit a peak of $9,481.50 in the previous session for its highest since April 3.

“It’s almost impossible to see what is happening from one day to the next. No doubt the tariff optimism that triggered the risk-on rally early in the week has faded again,” said Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy at Saxo Bank in Copenhagen.

U.S. Comex copper futures gained 0.5% to $4.87 a lb, bringing the premium over LME copper to $1,314 a ton.

Silver holding at $30ish, Can it keep up with Gold?

At 13:19 GMT, XAG/USD is trading $30.84, Unchanged.

Prices have also remained above the pivot at $30.53, which keeps the short-, medium-, and long-term trends firmly upward.

Daily Gold (XAU/USD)Gold, often viewed as silver’s counterpart, has outperformed with a breakout above $2,726.30, pushing prices closer to record highs at $2,790.17.

A sustained rally above $30.53 and a breakout over $30.98 may open the door for further gains, but for now, silver remains in gold’s shadow.

    Gold breaks $2900 per ounce

Gold has surged to a new all-time high, breaking through $2,911.72 per ounce on a thick mix of domestic and foreign uncertainty, inflation concerns, and a shifting macroeconomic landscape. While bullion has historically served as a safe-haven asset, the latest rally is not merely a reaction to market turbulence, but instead to a confluence of economic and financial factors that reinforce its role in global portfolios.
