Tariff deadline might extend for China

Gold futures reversed early losses to reach new all-time highs Tuesday, gaining for a third straight session on weaker U.S. bond yields and persistent trade and monetary policy uncertainty as investors continue to anxiously await President Trump’s August 1 tariff deadline.

The yield on benchmark U.S. 10-year notes fell near two-week low, making non-yielding bullion more attractive.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he plans to meet his Chinese counterpart next week, suggesting a possible extension of an August 12 tariff deadline, but European Union diplomats hinted that the E.U. is looking at broader counter-measures against the U.S. as prospects for a trade agreement dwindle.

“Trade uncertainty is prompting some safe haven demand,” Kitco Metals senior analyst Jim Wyckoff wrote. “The U.S. has got several trade deals in the works and there’s rumors that the E.U. and the U.S. might not be able to come to an agreement or certainly are not anywhere close yet.”

    Gold fell 3%, Silver .9%

Safe-haven gold fell 3% on Monday as risk sentiment crept in following the announcement of a temporary deal between the United States and China to reduce tariffs.

Spot gold was down 3% at $3,225.28 an ounce, as of 1344 ET (17:44 GMT). Bullion, considered a hedge against economic and geopolitical turmoil, hit a record high of $3,500.05 last month amid increased tariff uncertainty.

“June gold futures bulls have lost their overall near-term technical advantage. Bulls’ next upside price objective is to produce a close above solid resistance at $3,350. First resistance is seen at $3,250 and then at $3,275,” said Jim Wyckoff, senior analyst at Kitco Metals.

Spot silver slid 0.9% to $32.4 an ounce, platinum fell 1.9% to $976.06 and palladium dipped 3.4% to $942.69.

Gold and Silver are trying to stabilize after selloff

Although gold and silver saw disappointing price action on Friday, experiencing their worst daily loss since mid-December, some analysts note that the damage to the broad rallies has been limited.

The gold market started the week holding initial support around $2,880 an ounce. Spot gold last traded at $2,896.50 an ounce, up 0.50% on the day. Silver is also finding solid support, as it has bounced off its overnight lows just below $32 an ounce. Spot silver last traded at $32.20 an ounce, up 0.20% on the day.

Alex Kuptsikevich, Chief Market Analyst at FxPro, said in a note that gold’s price action has become a little more complicated following Friday’s selloff, as buyers have become more cautious.

Gold rises, tariffs hit auto industry

Trump announced 25% tariffs on all vehicles and foreign-made auto parts imported into the United States late on Wednesday, prompting heavy losses in Japanese and South Korean stocks in Asian trading overnight.

General Motors slumped 6%, while shares in Ford fell almost 5%, reflecting concerns about the impact on their supply chains.

“Uncertainty on the tariff front remains high, which is really tough for both businesses but also investors to plan into the future, and of course it’s making it really difficult for investors to price risk,” said Baylee Wakefield, a multi-asset portfolio manager at Aviva Investors.

Gold prices rose, up 0.7% on the day at $3,040 an ounce. Goldman Sachs raised its gold price forecast on Wednesday, citing stronger-than-expected ETF inflows and sustained central bank demand.
