Opinion piece, Gold impacted by panic buying

Some finance experts in Simpsonville said they’ve seen a surge in people investing in gold. They said it follows fears over the economy slowing.

Co-owner of JEHM Wealth and Retirement Eric Lahaie told 7NEWS the value of gold has increased by more than 30 percent in the last six months. He emphasized that it is largely because of panic buying.

“The appreciation is all that you’re going to get out of it. It doesn’t produce a dividend. It doesn’t generate interest like a stock, or a bond will do. So, you don’t get that advantage. And then, as I said earlier, it kind of moves in big jumps, and then flattens out for a long time,” said Lahaie.

“If you buy it in a brokerage account, when you sell gold, your gains are taxed at your ordinary income up to 28 percent,” Lahaie also said. “Versus, if you sell stock, as long-term capital gain, you’re going to be taxed somewhere between 15 and 20 percent on the high end. So, that’s kind of a disadvantage for gold.”

    Investment banks raise gold forecasts

UBS and Commerzbank raised their gold price forecasts on Friday, joining other investment banks as investors drive the safe-haven metal to record highs amid the economic uncertainty sparked by U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade policies.

Trump’s tariffs have roiled financial markets, stoking fears of inflation and a global recession. While he has paused most duties, he has hiked those on China to 145%, prompting Beijing to lift its tariffs on U.S. goods to 125%.

“We expect gold’s rally to extend into next year and for prices to stabilise at higher levels further out,” UBS analysts said in a note

    Citi raises gold price target

“In our bull case, we see gold prices reaching $3,500 per ounce by year-end, underpinned by much higher hedging/investment demand on fears of US hard landing/stagflation,” analysts at Citi said in a note.

President Trump will add copper to trade protection

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said nothing would stop President Donald Trump’s expanded 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum until U.S. domestic production is strengthened, and that Trump will add copper to his trade protections.

“We can’t be in a war and rely on steel and aluminum from some other country. I mean, it’s just not reasonable,” Lutnick said. “So the president wants steel and aluminum in America, and let me be clear, nothing is going to stop that until we’ve got a big, strong domestic steel and aluminum capability. And by the way, he’s going to add copper to that mix too.”

Chile in a “wait and see” mode

Chile’s place at the low-end of U.S. tariffs announced last week could be favorable for the world’s leading copper-producing country if U.S. President Donald Trump decides to slap tariffs on copper, Chile Mining Minister Aurora Williams said on Wednesday.

Chile is in “wait-and-see” mode until the investigation concludes, Williams told Reuters, but sees potential for a positive outcome even if the U.S. imposes tariffs on copper.

“If we assume that Chile is within the lowest tariff range, the application of a potential 10% tariff is lower than the tariffs we have seen for other copper-producing countries and therefore also generates a better price position,” Williams said
