Texas allow gold and silver as legal tender

Texans are to be allowed to pay with with gold and silver for everyday transactions after Governor Greg Abbott signed House Bill 1056 into law. The law, which was championed by Republican state representative Mark Dorazio, designates the precious metals as legal tender in the state.

Texans will be able to use their gold and silver holdings, stored in the state’s bullion depository, for payments through electronic systems such as mobile apps or debit cards.

The provision comes after legislative debate, and takes effect on May 1, 2027, enabling transactions based on the state comptroller’s valuation of the metals at the time of sale.

SPDR Gold Shares was rallying a sharp 1.6%

“Gold bars are bought as a hedge” against tariff-related downside risks to stocks as well as U.S. and global economic growth, commodity analysts at Citigroup said in a research note on Friday after the U.S. stock market’s close. “In precious metals, we see gold moving higher very near term” to $3,000 per ounce, they wrote.

“Gold has soared to another record high today amid a further ratcheting up in trade tensions,”  said Joe Maher, assistant economist at Capital Economics, in a note Monday. “Concerns that gold may get caught in the trade-war crossfire may also have led U.S. investors to buy up gold in order to get ahead of any future tariffs that might affect U.S. gold imports.”

“I think that once you punch a hole in the stock market… you’re going to have a lot of that money moving,” he predicted, suggesting that a 5-10% drop could trigger a significant shift in investor sentiment, driving capital towards safer havens like gold and silver.

Silver didn’t move with commodities in moved with gold,” he asserted, countering arguments that silver has lost its monetary significance.

    Gold gained .4%, market “choppy”

Spot gold gained 0.4% to $3,312.05 an ounce by 08:56 a.m. EDT (1255 GMT), after hitting a session low of $3,285.19 on Tuesday.

    U.S. gold futures rose 0.3% to $3,310.60.

“The gold market has been kind of choppy recently, just reacting to fresh daily fundamental news events with no real trending price action. In the near term, market top is in place,” Jim Wyckoff, senior analyst at Kitco Metals, said.

Goldman Sachs recommended on Wednesday a higher-than-usual allocation to gold in long-term portfolios, citing elevated risks to U.S. institutional credibility, pressure on the Fed, and sustained central bank demand.

Spot silver fell 0.3% to $33.20 an ounce, platinum firmed 0.8% to $1,088.65 and palladium eased 0.6% at $972.36.

Gold is turning jewelers to platinum

Prices of platinum, a white precious metal, have rallied over 30% this year to date, with spot prices currently around $1,200 per ounce. Spot gold prices are around 27% higher over the same period.

“Rising gold prices are incentivising jewellers to diversify, in what represents a change to historical patterns.”

The BofA analysts wrote that even a 1% switch in gold to platinum jewelry could help double the white metal’s supply deficit to 1.6 million ounces.
