Zambia says Saudi’s Manara interested in its copper assets

Saudi Arabia’s Manara Minerals is looking for critical minerals projects in Zambia to invest in, the southern African country’s mines minister Paul Kabuswe told Reuters on Thursday.

“They (Manara) are interested, but we do not know which ones yet,” he said on the sidelines of a mining conference in Riyadh, adding that an announcement on a potential mining deal between Zambia and Saudi Arabia is likely this year.

“We no longer want those agreements where we have 10% or 15%,” he said, adding that the government is also holding talks with Barrick Gold, Ivanhoe Mines and Chinese investors on their plans for new projects.

    Silver sees 10-year peak

“Silver’s been a laggard, and some would refer to it as the Cinderella metal, because it always misses the ball. Having said that, silver has finally woken up and broken above some key technical resistance,” independent analyst Ross Norman said. If current momentum continued, silver could challenge the $35 level, he added.

“Silver has a long history of higher volatility than gold, and that when gold makes a decisive move, silver’s amplitude is usually 2.0-2.5 times that of gold,” StoneX analyst Rhona O’Connell said in a recent note.

Freeport set to resume copper exports from Indonesia

Indonesia has restricted raw material exports to pressure companies to refine minerals locally and add value to its exports. Freeport has local refining capacity, but is seeking to keep exporting concentrate due to a fire last October at its Manyar smelterin East Java.

Should exports resume, it will relieve, although not reverse, a shortage of copper concentrate that has hit the profits of smelters.

Gold drops after inflation data, trade concerns loom

Spot gold eased 0.2% to $2,893.87 per ounce as of 09:58 a.m. ET (1458 GMT). U.S. gold futures fell 0.4% to $2,920.60.

Prices dropped over 1% after data showed the U.S. consumer price index jumped 0.5% last month, more than expected, reinforcing the Fed message that it was in no rush to resume cutting interest rates amid growing uncertainty over the economy.

“With today’s CPI data coming in hotter-than-expected, that has put weight on the gold market. Obviously at this point, any expectation that the market would have had of any type of rate cut later this year has now been put down,” said David Meger, director of metals trading at High Ridge Futures.

Spot silver shed 0.7% to $32.05 per ounce and palladium fell 0.3% to $973.11, while platinum added 0.7% to $990.10.

Gold, silver prices plummet in US Fed cuts

“Gold fell sharply post-Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting as the Fed’s indication of a slower pace of interest rate cuts than previously estimated for the next year,” Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst of Commodities at HDFC Securities, said.

Silver quoted 2.47 per cent lower at USD 29.98 per ounce in the international markets.

“Investors are anticipating US weekly unemployment claims data to be released later on Thursday to assess the strength of the labour market, while focusing on the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index data on Friday,” Abans Holdings’ Chief Executive Officer Chintan Mehta said.”

“We expect gold prices to rise further, but any delay in additional interest rate cuts could lead to short-term declines, creating opportunities for accumulation, Mehta said.”
